About this work
In the water towns of China's Jiangnan region — places like Zhouzhuang and Xitang — dusk is when the alleys come alive: whitewashed walls and dark tiled roofs sink into shadow while red lanterns light up along the canals. This painting imagines that moment. Warm light spills from a lattice window, the wet cobblestones catch the evening's reflections, and on the large foreground lantern two hand-painted characters read 平安 — "peace and well-being", the kind of blessing traditionally written on lanterns. The painting takes its name from it. The main lantern is built up with thick impasto brushwork that catches real light like a relief — see the close-up photos for the texture. Oil on a 30×30 cm canvas, fully handmade and one of a kind. The edges are painted, so it hangs beautifully unframed.
